Filling a burst vat with procedurally grown meat
The vat the meat plague comes from is now red and packed to the lid. Two new generator parts fill a torn vessel and spill out of the gap.
The burst meat vat is where the meat plague comes from, and now it looks like it. It’s packed to the lid with meat that’s been forced out of the torn side and over the pool, and its lamp, level strip and pool are red and not cyan. I approved the rebuilt vat and its three meat pieces.
Why does this vat get more meat than anything else?
The meat is coming from the meat vat. So in its first phase the vat needs outgrowths all over it and all over the floor, and its room is the epicenter of the explosion. I also wanted the meat on it to come from the meat growth generator and not be modeled by hand, with the vat filled completely and bursting.
The vat also had to go red. Juice is red everywhere else it’s shown now, and this vat’s lamp, level strip and spilled pool were still cyan because those colors are painted into the model.
Making the vat red without changing its shape
The vat’s vessel is now declared as holding meat juice in the machine generator. The machine kit also got a new liquid called spilt, which turns the theme’s leak material into a wet red that doesn’t glow, so the pool isn’t a glowing teal anymore. The two screens on the vat’s side blocks stay cyan, because they aren’t juice.
Only the vat’s color and glow textures and its two manifests changed. I compared the new mesh with the installed one and the surfaces were 0.0 mm apart. The other five machines came out as the same bytes.

The top rows are the vat before, in cyan. The middle rows are the vat now, in red. The bottom rows are the vat with the meat on it, at 2, 5 and 12 m, by lamp light and in bright light.
Telling the generator where a vessel is torn
A burst vessel now writes a breaches entry in its manifest. It has the gap’s position and direction, its width of 3.863 m and height of 2.7 m, how far the spill reaches, and the vessel’s radius, rim and lid. The meat layer reads that, along with the vat’s sockets, when it uses the vat as a host.
The layer kit got two new parts that any torn host can ask for.
fill() builds what’s inside the vessel. It’s a lofted column of rings, with 7 rings of 32 points at full detail and 4 rings of 16 points at lower detail. Inside the intact wall the radius is the vessel’s core. Through the gap it swells outward, and a smoothstep on the angle from the middle of the gap controls how much. Under a tipped lid the crack over the gap gets filled too, and with no lid the fill domes over the rim. Up to nine masses are placed on the forced-out face by rejection sampling so they don’t overlap, and rolls are squeezed out between the rim and the lid.
spill() lays a tongue of meat on the floor from the gap. A few sine terms shape how far it reaches, so it comes out in fingers. It has heaps on it and flat runners past its toe, and all of it is under the height the party can step over.
The defaults for the new settings build every older piece to the same bytes. I checked that by rebuilding all 44 of them.
Why is it three pieces on one vat?
One piece couldn’t hold what I wanted inside the triangle limit for a layer piece. So the vat has three.
| Piece | What’s in it | Triangles near | Triangles far |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skin | 48 films, 8 skirts around the foot, 7 veins | 1,565 | 298 |
| Masses | 30 masses, 16 roots, 10 sinews, 9 polyps, 9 eggs and more | 1,999 | 513 |
| Gut | the fill, 9 masses on its face, 5 rolls, the spill, 4 heaps, 5 runners | 1,335 | 175 |
Together that’s 4,899 triangles up close on a vat of 2,170. I only built the full growth level and not the two lower ones, because this vat is the source.
In the cavern I measured 10.4 to 11.9 ms per frame with the meat and 10.9 to 11.6 ms without, so I couldn’t see a cost.
Keeping the party able to walk around it
The meat pieces don’t have a collision shape. The vat’s collision stands in for them. A new measure in the kit checks how far the built meat sticks out past the host’s collision at body height, and the build fails a piece that sticks out more than 0.38 m. This one sticks out 0.34 m, so the party walks the ring of squares around the vat like before.
What’s left?
The back of the vat has a lot less meat than the torn side. That’s on purpose, because the wall held there and the triangles went to the torn side, and I’m keeping it.
The juice vat’s room has no meat in it, and the meat just stops at the room’s edge. The story is that its doors were sealed, but the room doesn’t have doors. I’m going to do something else there and haven’t decided what.
I didn’t run the whole test suite after the merge, only the 23 tests around models, machines, meat and saves, which passed.
