Building three more building looks from one kit and a judge

Fantasy, cyberpunk and eldritch looks are installed in the game, 491 members with none refused, and each changed after a judge saw it at 25 m.

The game now has three more building looks: fantasy, cyberpunk and eldritch. One install put 491 core members through the gate and none were refused. Each look went through a judge twice, and each judge sent it back once.

Fantasy, 45 seconds. A street from the field, the framing and quoins close up, the 25 m outline, a stone top storey under battlements next to a ruined house, dusk, and into the street door.
Cyberpunk. The roofline against the sky, the chimney drums, the same house in three looks at 25 m, night with the light strips, a dead block, and the street door.
Eldritch. The bone ribs close up, the 25 m outline, the same plots in steampunk beside it, a hipped house under its spire next to a dead one, night, and the street door.

How can three looks share one set of plans?

The rule I gave on 22 October was to reuse pieces, but add detail and variety pieces that change the silhouette or the structure of a building to suit the theme. So every look uses the same building plans, restyled by data: colors, window fills, roof pitch and which covering it uses. Each look then adds a few outline pieces that no other look has.

  • Fantasy has oak framing and limewash over a gray stone ground storey, thatch at 60 degrees, tall stone stacks, and battlements over stone.
  • Cyberpunk has pale ferrocrete below and graphite above with a white ledge at every floor, roofs at 30 degrees, fins on the ridges and at the corners of flat roofs, and a white drum on each chimney with a dish and two whips on top.
  • Eldritch has dark basalt below and a dusty mauve render above, bone bands and ribs bowed out of the walls, 60 degree shale roofs, a horn on each gable, a twisted spire on a hipped roof, and a leaning stack.

In the game’s look table, two flags came out of this. peak_piece says that a look’s hip peak carries a piece of its own, so the plan leaves the chimney off a hipped peak. narrow_door: false makes these three looks use the 2.5 m gate, because the pinned kit builds no narrow street door for them yet. Every body can still pass.

What did the judges make each look change?

A separate judge agent looked at each look in the game, at street range and from 25 m, and not only on the kit’s review sheets. Of the eight pieces fantasy first had, only three changed the outline at 25 m. Rounds 41, 43 and 44 asked for changes, and rounds 48, 47 and 46 agreed to the new versions.

Fantasy had three problems. The thatch read flat, with a crease halfway down every slope that made it look like a folded tarpaulin, so I added a darker band at the eave nose and a tone run down the slope. Gutters and downpipes on thatch looked wrong and went, leaving only an oak drip board. Battlements over timber framing were called incoherent, so they now sit only over a stone top storey. The dead tint was olive with straw blotches, against a caption that said gray with moss, so it became a gray-green.

Cyberpunk’s masts all had a crossbar, and at 25 m they looked like church crosses. The crossbar became a dish and two whips, and the drum on a flat roof moved to the corner at the street edge. The porch pergola was brown timber, so it became white polymer. The graphite upper storey did not show at 12 m on the two-storey house until I made it.

Eldritch’s hip peak carried both the spire and the leaning stack, and the stack won silently, so the spire was never seen. A hipped peak now carries the spire and no stack, and the cost is that a hipped house has no chimney. The parapet had about 12 thorns per side and looked like a castle crown. Thorns are now placed one per 1.5 m slot with an uneven jitter, which leaves gaps, and the ridge spines are gone. Under the game’s warm haze the dead tint drifted to cream and the mauve to lilac, so both went cooler and grayer.

Several lessons went into the kit’s skills before the next look was built, as the project rule says:

  • Judge the outline in the game at 25 m.
  • Give each roof one strong piece, with irregular gaps, because spikes on every edge looks like Halloween.
  • List every inherited prop, such as a porch, pergola, lamp or grille, and recolor it before filming.
  • A thin mast with a crossbar looks like a cross.
  • Judge colors under the haze.
  • A caption names only what a still shows.

Why did the first fantasy assembly have open faces?

The first time fantasy members were assembled into whole plans, the corners had open wall faces, with 604 to 711 rays a plan escaping. The corners’ wall ends were not closed. Quoins that wrap both wall ends fixed it, and the kit now has a check that lists such faults, with a wrong case it must catch. The cyberpunk membrane roof had a different trap: its picture had a seam, and the seams straddled the panel lines until the picture was made to tile on them. Open faces at the ridge are still there and are filed.

What changed in the game itself?

The game reads each look’s dead and lamp colors from data, and the palette textures changed for all three looks. The golden palette table has 40 points a look, and 32 changed for fantasy, 30 for cyberpunk and 31 for eldritch. A palette test failed on the fantasy and eldritch dust colors until the game’s theme table took the kit’s values. A leftover eldritch tint was also removed from the vine shader.

The test street lays 11 plots of each look today and skips the other 19, because the core sets lack the street-front kinds. The second wave of members is built and agreed, and installs next.

Numbers

  • One install: 491 core members, 0 refused. The full build at the pinned kit commit was 1007 members, 0 failed, and took about 90 minutes.
  • Fantasy: 167 members, 3407 KB at the first level of detail, 18,964 triangles.
  • Cyberpunk: 162 members, 3838 KB, 23,174 triangles.
  • Eldritch: 162 members, 4285 KB, 27,061 triangles.
  • Game tests with the members installed: fantasy 65 passed, cyberpunk 73, eldritch 67, none failed.
  • Judge rounds 41 to 48: three asked for changes and three agreed.
